About our facility

The Varick Contract Detention Facility is located in the heart of downtown New York City, next to the famed SOHO district and blocks away from Greenwich Village. We are minutes away from the dynamic Times Square and amidst one of the world's greatest shopping venues. In every direction you look you can find a multitude of restaurants featuring fine ethnic cuisine of your choice. The diverse cultures found in New York City can be described but must be experienced to be really appreciated. The Division of Immigration Health Services (DIHS) operated medical department at Varick began initial operation in 1988 and served a population of 300 male and female detainees until it was closed after the September 11 attacks, and was reactivated February 2008.

Meet our staff and see what we do

Operated by the DIHS, the ambulatory clinic is staffed by a dedicated group of skilled professionals, comprised of Public Health Service Officers and contract support staff. These employees carry out the DIHS mission to protect America by providing health care and public health services in support of immigration law enforcement. Detainees served at Varick CDF hail from all over the world. The population consists of 75% male and 25% female detainees.

In addition to our daily mission, we on occasion support ICE with medical escorts around the globe. New York City has three international airports from which to transport detainees to their country of origin. When required, USPHS officers accompany ICE Agents on these special assignments consisting of domestic and international transport.

The Varick ICE Contract Detention Facility is located in lower Manhattan, blocks away from the Holland Tunnel and minutes away from New Jersey.
